In this pandemic, work from home has become a new trend. More than a trend, it has become a necessity now. But the best thing about it is that you can now design and maintain your office the way you like. Isn’t it? So here I am, trying to make things easy and interesting for you by sharing 5 basic steps to set up your home workspace.
1. IDENTIFY YOUR NEEDS
This goes without saying that your needs will depend largely on the type of work you do. You might require a lot of floor space if you are a craftsman, a studio with proper lighting if you are a photographer, additional file cabinets if you are a lawyer or a consultant, multiple desktops if you are a graphic designer and so on. Accordingly, create a detailed list of your needs.
2. Select
Now, analyse the list and set up a space with the type, size and location that meets those requirements. Your desk or workstation has to be the place that allows you to focus, be organised and keep everything that you need to be at your disposal. Zeroing down to that one spot in your home is the most crucial step. So, decide on your work location smartly, be it your living room, your study, the attic or a garage.
3. Plan
Just after that, what you need to do is plan your work space by taking into account all your needs, and most importantly your budget. If you would have clients visitng your home office too, you must have a space to accommodate them. Remember, you might also need some extra storage space, electric connections, communicative connections and even some extra desk space.
If that demands a renovation, go for it. But then again, plan that too.

4. Organize
Having an organised and clutter-free workspace is crucial in creating a better workflow. It can help you focus and manage your workload. Once your space is clear, not only will it be easier to maintain, but you’ll be motivated to keep it neat and tidy, too.
Moreover, from home usually requires a lot of Skype or Zoom meeting to be attended, and you surely don’t want your co-workers to spy stacks of papers, stationary and coffee cups scattered throughout your space.
5. Make it clean, bright and fresh
Surround yourself with your favourite color and flowers to keep your energy levels high. If possible, place an aroma diffuser infused with your favourite scent somewhere in the room to keep the freshness alive.
But remember, just because you can have a myriad of photo frames, magazines, and plants, it doesn’t mean that you should bestrew your work space with them. Keep it simple and clutter-free. Use your desktop to hold only what you truly need when you’re working. Clip your cables, use coasters for your coffee mugs, jars and boxes to store your stationary, clear bags or files o hold important papers, and so on.
So, I guess now you have got a pretty fair and basic idea of how things are supposed to be when it comes to home workstations. More of such tips and ideas are on the way. So, stay tuned.
